Lately I have been doing a lot of meal prepping on the weekends for my work week. It mostly consists of prepping all my lunches for the rest of the week. Lunch is one of those meals that always seem to be a pain when you’re trying to eat healthy. Let’s just face it a good sandwich takes the right kind of and deli meat. Making sure that deli meat is affordable, preservative and hormone free; is an important factor when I am picking deli meats to use in my sandwiches. My meal prep has just gotten easier and quicker with Hormel natural choices deli meat.
What else would go with a homemade all-natural whole wheat bun besides natural preservative free deli meat? Cutting my meal prep time in half on the weekends is exactly what I forward too. Now I can spend extra time working in the garden.
Healthy Whole Wheat Bun Recipe

What You Will Need:
- 1 cup almond milk (regular milk is fine)
- 1/3 cup lukewarm water
- 1 package active dry yeast
- 1 large room temperature egg, lightly beaten
- 1 tbsp. sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
What To Do:
- Heat milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until milk shimmers. Transfer to a medium bowl and let cool to room temperature, about 10 minutes.
- Pour water into a small bowl. Sprinkle yeast over the water, stir, let stand for 5-10 minutes to dissolve.
- Add egg to the milk and whisk well with electrical mixer. Whisk in sugar, salt, oil and the yeast. Beat in whole-wheat flour. Using dough hooks, until you get a sticky dough. Let stand for 5 minutes.
- Start adding all-purpose flour to the dough, about ½ cup at a time, beating well after each addition. When the dough is somewhat firm and no longer too sticky to handle, turn it out onto a floured surface. Knead the dough for 7 to 8 minutes, using additional flour as needed to prevent sticking. Coat a large bowl with cooking spray. Add the dough and turn to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm, draft-free spot to rise until doubled in bulk, about 30 minutes to an hour.
- When the dough has doubled, turn it out onto a floured surface and knead for 1 minute. Using a chef’s knife, cut the dough into 8 equal pieces. Loosely cover with plastic wrap and let rest for 5 minutes.
- Coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray and dust it with flour. Shape the dough into tight balls and place them about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet. Coat a large sheet of plastic wrap with cooking spray and place it over the buns.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Set the buns in a warm, spot until they have risen by about half, 25 to 30 minutes.
- Bake the buns on the center rack until golden and crusty, about 25 minutes. The bottoms should sound hollow when tapped. Cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.
- Once done assemble you sandwich with your Hormel natural choice smoked deli turkey.
